GAF WindProven™ Unlimited Wind Warranty
The Best Roof System for Storm Country — No Wind Speed Ceiling

No maximum wind speed. No fine print ceiling. No certification required. The GAF
WindProven™ Unlimited Wind Warranty is the most complete wind protection available
in asphalt roofing — and it’s unlocked by four correctly installed components, not
a contractor’s membership in a manufacturer program. Hurricane-force winds. Coastal
Bend straight-line winds. Rio Grande Valley storm systems. WindProven™ covers them
all. Metal roofing can’t say that at half the price. Certified installers aren’t
the gatekeepers. The system is.

What the GAF WindProven™ Warranty Actually Means

Most roofing warranties cap wind coverage at 130 mph, 150 mph, maybe 160 mph. The GAF
WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty has no maximum wind speed. That’s not marketing language —
it’s the actual warranty language. When a qualifying GAF system is installed correctly using
the required four components, GAF covers wind damage at any wind speed. No ceiling. No upper
limit. No exclusion for “extreme” wind events.

For homeowners on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, in the Texas Coastal Bend, or anywhere in the
Rio Grande Valley — this is the most relevant roofing warranty that exists. Named storms don’t
respect wind speed caps. Sally, Zeta, Harvey, and every hurricane that’s tracked through these
markets exceeded what standard roofing warranties cover. WindProven™ doesn’t have that problem.

And here’s what the roofing industry doesn’t want homeowners to know: you don’t need a GAF
certified contractor to get this warranty. You need the right 4 components installed correctly.
That’s it. The warranty is tied to the system — not a contractor’s certification status.

The 4 Components That Unlock WindProven™

GAF WindProven™ requires Timberline HDZ® or UHDZ® shingles with LayerLock® technology
installed alongside four qualifying GAF accessory products. Every component matters —
this is a system warranty, not a shingle warranty.

Component 1 — Timberline HDZ® or UHDZ® Shingles

The foundation of the system. Both HDZ and UHDZ feature LayerLock® technology and
qualify for WindProven™ when installed with the other three components. The UHDZ
upgrades the system with UltraMat™ technology for Class 4 impact resistance — the
highest impact rating available. Both are unlimited wind. The UHDZ is unlimited wind
plus Class 4 impact. For Gulf Coast and Texas storm country, that’s the conversation.

Component 2 — GAF Starter Strip Shingles

Starter strip is the first line of defense at the roof edge — the exact zone where
wind-driven rain and uplift pressure attack first. GAF’s qualifying starter strip
products provide the adhesive bond at the eave and rake edges that keeps the first
course of shingles sealed under wind loading. This is one of the most commonly
shortcut components on roofing jobs. It shouldn’t be — the roof edge is where
Gulf Coast storms find every installation shortcut immediately.

Component 3 — GAF Roof Deck Protection

Qualifying GAF underlayment installed over the decking before shingles go down.
This is the second line of defense when shingles are compromised — and on the
Gulf Coast and in South Texas, it gets tested every storm season. Standard 15 lb
felt is not a qualifying product and is not appropriate for these climates regardless
of warranty requirements. Synthetic underlayment rated for Gulf Coast and Texas
coastal UV and moisture conditions is what belongs under every roof system we install. Our Roof Nerd Systems diagnostic approach includes underlayment assessment on every pre-installation inspection.

Component 4 — GAF Ridge Cap Shingles OR Leak Barrier + Attic Ventilation

The fourth component is either qualifying GAF ridge cap shingles, or a qualifying
GAF leak barrier combined with proper attic ventilation. Ridge cap is the highest
and most exposed point of the roof — the first place wind finds on every storm.
Installing qualifying GAF ridge cap shingles completes the system and closes the
loop on WindProven™ coverage. For the UHDZ system, GAF’s TimberTex® ridge cap
is manufactured with the same UltraMat™ technology — Class 4 impact resistance
from the peak of the roof to the eave.

Why WindProven™ Beats Metal Roofing for Storm Country Homeowners

The roofing industry pushes metal roofing hard in storm markets. The pitch is usually
140 mph wind rating, long lifespan, premium protection. Here’s what they don’t put
in the brochure.

  1. WindProven™ Has No Wind Speed Ceiling. Metal Has 140 mph.
A typical metal roofing wind warranty caps at 140 mph. GAF WindProven™ has no maximum
wind speed. Hurricane Katrina made landfall with winds exceeding 140 mph. Harvey,
Ida, Laura — all exceeded or approached that threshold. A 140 mph wind warranty on
a metal roof is a ceiling that real Gulf Coast and Texas storms have already blown
through. WindProven™ doesn’t have a ceiling to blow through.
  2. Metal Costs 2–3x More for Less Warranty Coverage
A properly installed GAF WindProven™ system — HDZ or UHDZ — costs a fraction of
a metal roof installation. You’re paying 2 to 3 times more for a system with a
lower wind warranty ceiling and none of the impact resistance benefits the UHDZ
brings to the table. The math doesn’t work for most homeowners in storm country
when a WindProven™ system delivers unlimited wind protection at standard replacement cost. Financing options are available for WindProven™ system installations.
  3. The Question You Should Be Asking Your Contractor — Not About Certification
The roofing industry has conditioned homeowners to ask “are you GAF certified?” as
a proxy for quality. Here’s the better question: “Are you installing all four
qualifying GAF components to unlock WindProven™ coverage?” Because that’s what
the warranty actually requires. Not a certification. Not a program membership.
Four specific components installed correctly. Contractors who lean hard on
certification status and gloss over installation specs are selling you a badge
instead of a system. The warranty language doesn’t care about the badge. It cares
about the four components. Ask about those. Every time.
  4. UHDZ Adds Class 4 Impact Resistance — Metal Doesn’t Automatically
Class 4 impact resistance on the UHDZ via UltraMat™ technology is the highest
impact rating available under UL 2218 testing. This matters for hail in Texas
and for wind-driven debris in Gulf Coast storm events. A standard metal roof
installation is not automatically Class 4 impact rated — that requires specific
panel profiles and installation methods. The UHDZ system delivers Class 4 impact
resistance standard, across the entire shingle field and the TimberTex® ridge cap,
at a fraction of the cost of a metal system.
  5. 30-Year Algae Protection on UHDZ — The Gulf Coast and South Texas Need This
The 30-year StainGuard Plus PRO™ algae protection warranty on the UHDZ is the
longest algae protection warranty GAF offers. In the Mississippi Gulf Coast
humidity environment and South Texas heat, algae discoloration accelerates
faster than in mild climates. The UHDZ system addresses this with 10% more
time-release algae-fighting capsules than standard StainGuard Plus™ products.
Your roof looks right and performs right for 30 years against one of the most
    common complaints in these markets.
  6. The Complete Picture — What the UHDZ System Actually Delivers
Unlimited wind speed protection. Class 4 impact resistance. 30-year algae
protection. Lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects. All from
a single correctly installed 4-component GAF system. This is the cream of the
crop for storm country roofing — and it’s available at standard asphalt
replacement cost. No metal roofing premium. No certification gatekeeping.
Just the best system available, installed correctly.

Bottom line: The GAF WindProven™ system —
especially with the UHDZ upgrade — is the most complete storm protection roofing
system available for asphalt shingle installation. No wind speed ceiling. Class 4
impact resistance. 30-year algae protection. Installed correctly by any contractor
who knows what they’re doing. SJ&H Roofing installs this system across the
Mississippi Gulf Coast and Texas. For pre-season preparation before your WindProven™ installation, see our 2026 hurricane prep guide. Call us and let’s talk about what it means

How SJ&H Installs a WindProven™ System

The warranty is only as good as the installation. Here’s how we make sure every
WindProven™ system we install actually delivers what the warranty promises.

  • Pre-Installation Assessment: decking condition, ventilation balance, and existing failure modes documented with photos before anything comes off. The new system gets specified to address what the old one tells us. See our roof repair guide for how we diagnose before we scope.
  • All 4 Components, No Substitutions: qualifying GAF starter strip, qualifying roof deck protection, qualifying shingles, and qualifying ridge cap — every time, no shortcuts. The WindProven™ warranty requires all four. We install all four.
  • Wind Zone Fastening Patterns: correct nail placement and count per shingle for the wind zone we’re working in — Gulf Coast Mississippi, Texas Coastal Bend, Rio Grande Valley. The fastening pattern is part of the installation spec that makes the system perform under load.
  • Photo Documentation Throughout: underlayment installed, starter strip at eaves and rakes, shingle field, ridge cap, all flashing and penetrations — documented so you have a complete record of the system that was installed.
  • Final Walk-Through and Documentation: we confirm the system, walk you through what was installed, and give you the documentation that supports your WindProven™ warranty coverage.

WindProven™ FAQ

Do I need a GAF certified contractor to get WindProven™?
No. The warranty is tied to the qualifying system components being installed correctly — not to contractor certification status.

What shingles qualify?
Timberline HDZ® and Timberline UHDZ® qualify when installed with the required companion products.

Is UHDZ worth the upgrade?
If you want Class 4 impact resistance and 30-year algae protection on top of unlimited wind, yes — UHDZ is the premium option.

Does WindProven™ matter more than a 130 or 140 mph warranty?
Yes. In real storm markets, the gap between a capped wind warranty and an unlimited one matters a lot when the next storm exceeds the cap.

Can I finance a WindProven™ roof system?
Yes. We offer financing options for qualifying projects in Mississippi and Texas.
